Students Experience Real-World Media Production During Coast TV Studios Visit
The tour began with a front-row view of the inner workings of Coast TV’s “Coast Life” program. Students were treated to a live taping of the show, which offered a unique window into the complexities of television production. Interacting with the program’s hosts, Paige Marley and Leah Rizzo, students engaged in insightful discussions about the production of the popular local program.
The students also met journalist Ana Sofia Román, who broadcasts for Coast TV and sister station Telemundo. Román shared her experiences and perspectives on the evolving media landscape, instilling in students a deep appreciation for the role of diversity and inclusivity in journalism.
A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to explore the multiple sets housed within the state-of-the-art Thomas Draper building. This hands-on experience immersed students in the intricacies of a contemporary broadcast facility, from mastering the art of lighting and camera operation to the subtleties of sound engineering. It also underscored the importance of the teamwork and coordination required to deliver top-quality content to viewers.
“Being able to visit the station was a great experience since we were able to see the media industry in action,” said student Brady Smith. “Having the opportunity to ask questions to people who have been successful in the media industry was very helpful and assuring.”
Fellow student Kevin Cespedes said, “It was great to get a feel of the work environment and understand what it is like to work for local news. It was great to see how our courses apply to the real world.”
Rob Rector, department chair of the communications program, expressed his appreciation for the invaluable experience provided by Coast TV’s studios.
“Touring WRDE gave the students within the program the chance to see all the skills they are learning at Delaware Tech in action,” he said. “The whole team at the station was so gracious with their time and sharing their knowledge with the students. It’s a testament to the commitment of Coast TV in nurturing the next generation of media professionals.”
He also noted that Delaware Tech remains dedicated to offering students enriching opportunities beyond the classroom, such as the visit to Coast TV.
“The department extends its gratitude to Coast TV, Britt Leoni, Jeanette Gallardo, Paige Marley, Leah Rizzo, and Ana Sofia Román for their generous support in facilitating this enriching experience for students,” Rector said.
